Derek was born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii. The beauty and power of the ocean inspired Hoffmann to begin shooting still photos at his home break Sandy Beach. After graduating from Henry J. Kaiser High School in 1984 he moved to the North Shore and learned to navigate its powerful waves and currents. He couldn't shake the rush of viewing his footage of the action and he was hooked.

In 1989 Hoffmann shot 16mm film from the water at Pipeline and other Hawaii locations for the theatrical release of "Rolling Thunder". While sitting in the theater and watching his footage on the big screen he realized what he would pursue for his life's work.

Derek has worked on hundreds of episodes of prime time television and is also an accomplished producer.

He resides in his hometown of Hawaii Kai.
